Rufous Treepie is a common bird from the crow family Corvidae. Their distribution range include most of the India, parts of south and south-east Asia including Thailand and Cambodia. Rufous Treepie is one of the two species of treepies found in Western Ghats. The other is White-bellied Treepie.
Rufous Treepie – Dendrocitta vagabunda – General Description & Appearance
Upper and underparts are rufous in color. They have long off-white tail with black tip. Wings have white patches with edges black, making them wonderful to watch in flight. Head and neck region are grayish black in color. Both the male and female birds look alike.
Behavior
These birds can be seen alone or in pairs or groups. Often seen with other common birds like Drongos. They are friendly to human presence. So it is common to see them in backyards and open agricultural fields.
Habitat & Distribution
Seen in almost all types of habitats except deserts and mountain regions. Common in gardens, households, forests and open fields. One of the most common birds in Kerala and south India. Distributed all over Indian subcontinent, except deserts and high Himalayas. Found in southeast Asia including Thailand, with sightings recorded from Cambodia, Myanmar and some parts of Vietnam also.
Size
It is a medium sized bird with size around 50 cm.
