Black and Orange Flycatcher is an exotic bird from the Western Ghats. It is endemic to the region. So birders often consider it to be very precious to spot one. Find more about this little bird below.

The above picture is that of the male Black and Orange Flycatcher. And the one below is a female. I think the photo will be sufficient to tell the difference in appearance between the male and the female. Both photos are from Munnar in Kerala. And also from the same spot. So they might be a pair.

The shape and size of the bird is very similar to that of other flycatchers. The name of the bird aptly describes it color. The male bird has black head and wings while the female has more of a grey color. Eyes and bills are also black in color. In addition both male and female have orange or rufous color on the back, underside, tail and legs.
This bird from the Muscicapidae family is usually very shy. They live in bushy habitats of high altitude regions of Western Ghats. So it is a bit difficult to spot this bird. Munnar, Nilgiris and Kodaikanal have fair chances of spotting. Furthermore, this flycatcher doesn’t generally move very far from its small territory. So that means, if you find the location once, there are chances you find it again at the same place at a later time.
